TW Timberwork was invited to undertake and run the project of installing a decking and protective sporting surface around the Nike Fuel Station. It was to be constructed on Clapham Common in the summer of 2012.

""

The surface being installed was 24m x 16m, half of which was to be a decked area covered with a membrane and wet pour rubber to create a sporting impact surface. Laser levels were used to survey the area. The area was then marked out with string lines. This is to ensure the area is square and within the desired configuration.6” x 2” timbers were used to construct the framework ensuring sufficient support for the amount of impact and training to be undertaken on this platform. 4m decking boards were used and fixed down at 500mil centres. This was to avoid flexing or damaged to the decking boards. The frame was the propped up to the correct height using pegs knocked into the ground and 4×4 posts placed onto of large slabs. The use of slabs is a good method of supporting a decking area, as it spreads the weight preventing sinking. As this area was to last a year it also had to be quick to dismantle and remove. Once propped at the desired height, laser levels were used before securing the framework firmly. 65mil nails were used to fix the decking boards down ensuring the joists were staggered, as this adds strength to the construction and avoids movement.

An organic membrane was laid out on half of the decked area to create a base for the wet pour rubber. The rubber was then spread, 20mil thick, onto the membrane to give the perfect sporting surface.

The Nike Fuel Station design was based around a wristband. The building structure had the swooping shape which then continued through the design of the decking and rubber work by TW Timberwork.

The second half of the decking surface was set out at a 45 degree angel with varnished larch wood, creating a contrasting feature against the wet pour surface. The same techniques of setting out and levelling were then repeated. Due to the thickness of the larch boards, the frame work had to be set out at 300mil centres. This ensures the boards have enough support to take the weight and pressure. The larch boards were then spaced out with 6mil gaps between each board. This allows for expansion and is also aesthetically pleasing.

Steps and a disabled ramp were added to the design as the project developed. TW Timberwork were able to design and make both, ensuring minimal intrusion to the overall affect. The drop from the stage to the ground was measured and then evenly divided by the number of steps required, which was two. The drop measurement was then calculated to ensure the ramp gradient was within safety regulations.

The team at TW timberwork enjoyed working alongside the Nike instillation teams and were pleased with the overall finish and outcome.

TW Timberwork were contracted to build possibly the largest deck to date at 24m X 16m.

""

Rob and his team were super efficient and did an amazing job through some of the worst British weather on records.

Every member of Rob and his team turned up every day, always the first to arrive and last to leave.

Their attention to detail was perfect following a complex pattern and cutting shapes into the timber deck which was done to maximum precision.

I would have no hesitation in recommending Rob and his team for any decking requirements private or commercial.

Great job lads thanks
